The Polis Project is excited to welcome the University of Maryland’s Christopher James Bonner to our Virtual Book Salon. On Thursday, December 17 he will join us to discuss his new book, Remaking the Republic: Black Politics and the Making of American Citizenship (University of Pennsylvania Press). Based on extensive research into nineteenth century media, public protests, legal fights, national conventions and efforts at protecting fugitive slaves, Bonner makes the case that Black politics were not just at the center of citizenship debates from the country’s founding through to Reconstruction, but were a driving force that shaped the contours of belonging and obligation within the American republic.
We will talk about all of this, and more. The conversation will stream live and simultaneously on the Polis Project Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook accounts.
