The Global Sumud Flotilla is now within 200 nautical miles of Gaza, entering what is described as a “high-risk zone” where Israeli attacks are expected. Over the past weeks, activists aboard the 47-boat civilian flotilla have reported multiple drone strikes with incendiary and chemical devices in international waters, damaging vessels but causing no casualties. Israel has already set a precedent. In 2010, Israeli forces stormed the Mavi Marmara and killed ten activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid.
Any interception of the flotilla is a violation of international law and human rights. Gaza, under an unlawful blockade since 2007, is legally entitled to receive aid by sea. The siege has collapsed essential infrastructure and left the enclave in a state of mass humanitarian devastation. The blockade constitutes collective punishment.
The flotilla, carrying parliamentarians, activists, and humanitarian cargo, insists on reaching Gaza directly rather than surrendering its cargo to Israel or Cyprus for distribution. To obstruct this mission is the continuation of a broader policy of strangulation that denies Palestinians the right to life and dignity. Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 66,055 people and wounded 168,346 since October 2023. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble.
