The demolition of slums inhabited by poor and marginalised communities, often to make way for urban development that caters to the wealthy, is a practice long perpetuated by ruling powers across the world. The fascist BJP government has now escalated this cruelty to another level. The Hindutva rulers, who not only question the very existence of minority communities but also seek to keep them perpetually intimidated, are demolishing homes solely based on the religious identity of these minorities. India, which should be a nation for all, transcending religions, castes, languages, and regional identities, is being turned into a place where oppressed communities are stripped of their basic rights and silenced.

Official statistics on the number of homes demolished across India remain undisclosed. However, according to media reports, by mid-2024, approximately 1.5 lakh homes had already been demolished, and this number continues to rise. It is estimated that around ten lakh people have been rendered homeless by these Hindutva rulers. At a time when the world should be focused on providing housing for all, the use of bulldozers to destroy existing homes raises the question of whether these rulers are even human.

Following Narendra Modi’s success with his experiments as chief minister of Gujarat, the first laboratory of Hindutva, the focus of Hindutva policies shifted to the Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh. Here, Muslim homes are being demolished without justification, while the majority Hindu population is being rallied to support these actions through propaganda. This brutal strategy is being extended to other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand.

When fascism grows in one part of the world, it is our duty to prevent its spread to other regions. Hindutva spreads like cancer. It is no longer possible to claim that Hindutva cannot penetrate South India. The BJP has already made inroads into Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, encircling Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the BJP alliance secured 19% of the votes in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, despite lacking the support of the dominant regional parties in these states. The fact that 79 lakh people in Tamil Nadu voted for the BJP alliance is not a statistic to be taken lightly. It is imperative for democratic organisations to urgently and effectively communicate the atrocities committed by the BJP in states under its rule to those in states where it has yet to gain power.

In this context, The Polis Project has been documenting the stories and tears of those whose homes were demolished by bulldozers. Recognizing the need to share these narratives with people across the country in their own languages, we at maattru.in, a Tamil alternative media platform dedicated to fostering political awareness, have decided to translate and publish these stories in Tamil.

With the aim of bringing the stories of homes demolished by the BJP and its Hindutva ideology to the people of Tamil Nadu, we have collaborated with several translators. To start, six articles were translated by six different translators. For many of them, this was a new and emotionally challenging experience. There were moments when they had to pause their work, overwhelmed by tears. However, they understood that crying in solitude would not bring about change. With the resolve to share these truths with the masses, they wiped their tears and continued the work of translation, which then went through multiple rounds of reviews and edits.

சிறுபான்மையின மக்களின் இருப்பையே கேள்விக்குறியாக்குவதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல், அவர்களை எப்போதும் அச்சுறுத்தலிலேயே வைத்திருக்க விரும்பும் இந்துத்துவ ஆட்சியாளர்கள், அம்மக்களின் சிறுபான்மை மத அடையாளத்திற்காகவே அவர்களது வீடுகளை இடித்துத் தள்ளி வருகின்றனர். மதங்களையும், இனங்களையும், மொழிகளையும், மாநில அடையாளங்களையும் கடந்து அனைவருக்குமான நாடாக இந்தியா இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று ஏதோவொரு வகையில் ஒடுக்கப்படும் மக்கள் தங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்க வேண்டிய சம உரிமைகளைக் கேட்டு கேள்விகளே எழுப்ப முடியாத நிலைக்கு அவர்களைத் தள்ளுகிறார்கள் ஆட்சியாளர்கள். “உனக்கான அடிப்படை உரிமையான குடியுரிமையையும் நில உரிமையையும் அடித்து நொறுக்கிவிட்டால், நீ அந்தப் பிரச்சனையிலேயே சிக்கிக் கொள்வாய்தானே. பிறகெப்படி சமத்துவம், சம உரிமை எல்லாம் உன்னால் பேச முடியும்?” என்பது போலத்தான் ஆட்சியாளர்கள் நடந்து கொள்கிறார்கள்.

இதுவரை இந்தியா முழுவதும் எத்தனை வீடுகளை இடித்துத் தள்ளியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்கிற அதிகாரப்பூர்வ புள்ளி விவரங்கள் எங்கும் வெளியிடப்படவில்லை. இருப்பினும் பல்வேறு அமைப்புகள் வெளியிடும் தகவல்களின்படி, 2024 ஆம் ஆண்டின் மத்தியிலேயே சுமார் 1.5 இலட்சம் வீடுகளுக்கும் மேலாக இடித்திருப்பதாகத் தெரிகிறது. அந்த எண்ணிக்கை இந்த நொடி வரையிலும் தொடர்ந்து அதிகரித்துக்கொண்டேதான் இருக்கிறது. எப்படிப் பார்த்தாலும் சுமார் பத்து இலட்சம் மக்களையாவது வீடற்றவர்களாக ஆக்கியிருக்கிறார்கள் இந்த இந்துத்துவ ஆட்சியாளர்கள். உலகில் வாழும் அனைத்து மனிதர்களுக்கும் வாழ்வதற்கு வீடுகள் உருவாக்கப்பட வேண்டிய காலத்தில், ஏற்கனவே இருக்கிற வீடுகளை புல்டோசர் கொண்டு இடித்துத் தள்ளும் இவர்கள் மனிதர்கள்தானா என்கிற சந்தேகமே நமக்கு வருகிறது.

இந்துத்துவாவின் பரிசோதனைக் கூடமாக குஜராத்தில் தொடர்ச்சியாக செய்து பார்த்த பல்வேறு பரிசோதனைகளில் அவர்களுக்குக் கிடைத்த வெற்றியைத் தொடர்ந்து, உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் காரணமே இல்லாமல் முஸ்லிம்களின் வீடுகளை இடித்துத் தள்ளிவிட்டு, பெரும்பான்மையான இந்துக்களிடம் அதற்கு ஆதரவு கிடைக்கிற வகையில் பிரச்சாரமும் செய்து வருகிறது யோகி ஆதித்யநாத்தின் பாஜக அரசு. உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் இருந்து மத்தியப் பிரதேசம், மகாராஷ்டிரம், டெல்லி, ராஜஸ்தான், உத்தரகாண்ட் என்று ஒவ்வொரு மாநிலத்திற்கும் இக்கொடூரத் திட்டம் எடுத்துச் செல்லப்படுகிறது.
