To mark six years of the arbitrary arrests and imprisonment of political dissidents in the Bhima Koregaon case, The Polis Project is publishing a series of writings by the BK-16, and their families, friends and partners. (Read the introduction to the series here.) By describing various aspects of the past six years, the series offers a glimpse into the BK-16’s lives inside prison, as well as the struggles of their loved ones outside. Each piece in the series is complemented by Arun Ferreira’s striking and evocative artwork. This poem has been translated to English by Vernon Gonsalves.
Of the six-and-a-half years I spent in prison in the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case, four-and-a-half years were in the Anda cell. The Anda cell is a prison within a prison. Its stony walls and sight-obscuring forest of iron bars put the mental fortitude, ideological endurance and courage to the test. What happened to political prisoners like me confined to these cells of darkness? Why have prisons been built? For whom, and by whom? Prison is marked by many contradictions—between exploitation and theft; prisons and justice; prisons and democracy; prisons and correctional homes. Trying to understand these contradictions and figure out the psychology behind it and resolve them is a struggle in itself. Throughout, we wonder how can one remain in prison and still keep alive that optimism of the words of the poet Saahir Ludhianvi who envisioned a time “when the government of the world will be run without jails.” My/Our dilemmas in prison, within this context, is what this poem is all about.
भीमा कोरेगाव -एल्गार परिषद खटल्यात साडेसहा वर्षाच्या तुरुंगवासापैकी साडेचार वर्षे अंडा सेल मध्ये घालवावी लागली. अंडा सेल म्हणजे तुरुंगातील तुरुंग. अंडा सेलच्या पाषाणी भिंती आणि डोळ्यांपुढे असलेले लोखंडी गजांचं जंगल बंद्यांच्या मानसिक वैचारिक सहनशीलतेची आणि धैर्याची जणू परीक्षा घेतात. या काळोखाच्या कोठड्यांमध्ये राहून माझ्यासारख्या राजकीय बंद्याचं काय झालं? तुरुंग कशासाठी, कुणासाठी आणि कुणी बांधलंय? शोषण आणि चोरी, तुरुंग आणि न्याय, तुरुंग आणि लोकशाही, तुरुंग आणि सुधारगृह या सर्वांमधील अंतर्विरोधांचा तळात राहून उत्खनन करावं, त्याचं मानसशास्त्र समजून त्याची सोडवणूक करावी, म्हणजेच संघर्ष करावा आणि साहिर लुधीयानवी यांच्या शब्दातील ‘जेलों के बिना जब दुनिया की सरकार चलाई जायेगी’ हा आशावाद तुरुंगात राहून कसा जिवंत ठेवता येईल… या साऱ्या संदर्भातील माझी/ आमची तुरुंगातील कश्मकश म्हणजे ही कविता.
बंदी जाणिवांचे // Prisoners of Consciousness
| “इक उम्र से यही रवायत रही है | “It’s been this way down the ages, |
| कसूरवारों को बेकसुरों से शिकायत रही है” | it’s the guilty who’ve had a complaint against the innocent” |
| ते तुम्हाला डांबू शकतात तुरुंगात | They may throw you behind bars |
| कारण ते तुम्हाला घाबरून आहेत | because they are afraid, of you. |
| ते तुमच्या शरीराला अटक करू शकतात | They may arrest your body, |
| ते तुमच्या जाणिवांना अटक नाही करू शकत | but they can’t confine your consciousness. |
| म्हणून ते म्हणतात | So, they say |
| ‘गोली मार भेजे में’ | “blow a bullet through his brain” |
| ढिसच्यांग… | dhisschyang… |
| मग सुरू होतात आपल्याच जनतेवर | and then they start on our very own people |
| असत्याचे प्रयोग | their experiments with untruth, |
| प्रयोगशाळेत रचले गेले कुभांड | frame-ups fabricated in laboratories |
| ‘भीमा कोरेगाव षडयंत्र’ | “Bhima-Koregaon Conspiracy.” |
| अन्याय अत्याचार विरोधी प्रतिकार | They claimed to have eyewitness evidence |
| नवपेशवाई मसनात गाडण्या | of the treason: |
| दलित श्रमिकांचा एल्गार | of resistance to injustice and oppression, |
| त्यांच्या ‘हो’ ला ‘हो’ करण्यास नकार | of Dalits and toilers giving a clarion call |
| आणि | to bury the New Peshwai, |
| ‘मी यापुढे भाजपला मत देणार नाही’ | of a refusal to nod yes in submission, |
| अशी समूह प्रतिज्ञा … | and, |
| राजद्रोही असल्याचा मानला गेला | of a collective pledge, |
| प्रथम दर्शनी पुरावा | “I won’t ever vote BJP.” |

| प्रियेच्या दुःखात डोळे हरवतात | eyes lost to a beloved’s suffering, |
| गर्दी करून दुःख धावतात | crowds of sorrows constantly running, |
| जीव गुदमरतो मानवी स्पर्शाच्या अभावात | and a soul stifling from lack of human touching, |

| आपल्या जनतेसोबत मोर्चात चालण्याची | to march with one’s own in a morcha, |
| बुलंद घोषणा कविता गाणी गायनाची | for the voice to soar in slogans, poetry and song, |
| वाद संवादामध्ये सहभागी होण्याची | to partake in discussion and debate |
| आपल्या प्रियजनांना प्रेम करण्याची | to love one’s loved ones |

| स्वातंत्र्य समता बंधुता असलेला | to build that country |

| मेंदू भोवतीचे हे पोलादी गजराज | These iron bars reign, encircling the brain |
| क्षणभर विचलित संभ्रमित करतात | diverting and deluding for a moment |
| शरीरातील बंडखोर पेशींना | the body’s rebellious cells. |
| पण शब्दांच्याच सोबतीने सापडेल | But, the fellowship of words will themselves discover |
| एखादा सत्याचा तुकडा | some morsel of truth, |
| सत्य | truth |
| जे सांगतं दुःखाचं कारण निवारण | that tells of sorrow, of its reason, its resolution. |
| बंदीजण लावून असतात अशी स्वयमेव आस | Inmates keep carrying such inner yearnings |
| पण शब्दही आज मुक्त नाहीत | but words too are not now free, |
| ते सुद्धा नजरकैदेत | they too are incarcerated, |
| आतही…. बाहेरही….. | inside too… outside too… |
| तरीही जिवंत राहण्याच्या गरजेतून | But, the need to remain alive, still makes |
| बंदीजण लिहितात – | inmates write – |
| कैसे कटे दिन रात… नि | of each passing day, each night… and |
| सुन्या सुन्या तनहाई बाबत | of the nothingness of loneliness, |
| तरसलेली नजर | looks of longing, |
| आठवणीही नजरकैदेत | memories too, in incarceration, |
| पहिल्यांदाच मिळालेली हक्काची खोली | of getting, for the first time, a room by right; |
| खोलीत दफन होत जाणाऱ्या | about the things getting buried in that room… |

| कोमेजून जात असलेले गुलाब | roses fading away, |
| फाटत असलेले गुलाबी ओठ | rosy lips cracking away, |

| खायला उठणारं एकटेपण | the loneliness of waking to eat, |

| दुःख वेदनेपासून मुक्तीचा भाव जागवणाऱ्या गुजगोष्टी पत्रांमधून… | and those confidences that let loose pent-up feelings for freedom from grief, |
| शब्द अंधार पेलतात ! | all through letters… |
| शब्द उजेडही देतात ! | Words shoulder the darkness! |
| वेदना बनते मोरपिसी सुंदर नि हलकी | Words even give light! |
| पिंजऱ्याचे भडवे होतात अस्वस्थ | Pain becomes a peacock’s plume, beautiful and light |
| सेंसरिंगसाठी पाठवली जातात पत्रे पुन्हा पुन्हा | and the pimps of the cages grow insecure; |
| एंटी नक्षल ऑपरेशन कडे बेकायदा | letters are sent for censoring again and again, |
| ते शोधून काढतात त्यातून अर्थाचे अनर्थ | illegally to the anti-Naxal operation |
| राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षेला धोका पोहोचवणारे विस्फोटक शब्द | who then ferret out non-sense from sense, |
| षडयंत्र आणि वेडेपणा | madness and conspiracies and |
| करूणा भावना आणि मानवी प्रेमाला | explosive words dangerous to national security. |
| ते टरकून आहेत आतून | Compassion and human love |
| म्हणून ते रोखतात कौटुंबिक संवाद | terrify their inner being; |
| प्रिय जनांवरील मृत्युलेख | so they block all familial exchange, |
| कविता आणि गाणी | obituaries of loved ones, poems and songs. |
| एका नंतर एक समजपत्रं देतात | Caution notices are served, one after the other, |
| पत्रे रोखतात बेकायदा | letters unlawfully blocked, |
| शब्दांवर बंदी | words banned, |
| पत्रांवर बंदी | letters banned; |
| पत्रातील शब्दांचा किती तडफडत तडफडत | in their hands |
| जीव गेला त्यांच्या हातामध्ये | words from letters have squirmed helplessly and died. |
| आज देशाचा 75 वा स्वातंत्र्यदिन | It is the country’s 75th Independence Day today. |
| बंद्याचं स्वातंत्र्य लुटण्यात आलं ! | The inmates have their freedom plundered. |
| बंद्यांना बुंदी वाटण्यात आली ! | Sweets were distributed to the inmates. |
| सत्यमेव जयते ! | Satymeva Jayete[ii]! |
| रोगट समकालाची लागण झालेली भेसुर हवा | The infection of these diseased times rose to a malevolent wind; |
| आणीबाणीचा मास्क चढवूनही तोल गेलेले बुझदिल गेंडे क्षणभंगुरतेच्या सावटाखाली चालत गेले | rattled rhinos, despite emergency masks, lost all balance; |
| भुकेल्या मुंग्यांचे तांडे | files of famished ants trudged under the shadow of their ephemeral existence. |
| घरोघरी कालाहांडी | Kalahandi at every door, |
| धरम करम तल्लफ भारी | rites and rituals galore, |
| कन्नीगुल अंधारात विश्वगुरु मंत्र मारी | and in that directionless darkness, the Vishwaguru’s mantra roar: |
| करोना गो…गो… | “Corona go… go…” |
| हुकूमाच्या गुलामांनी तुरुंगातही दिवे मालवले | In the prison too, the slaves to command blew the lamps out |
| बेबंद अंधारात करोनाचे आकडे लपविले | and, in the unbridled blackness, the corona figures hid, behind a shroud, |
| ग्लोबल गोंधळात लोकल गोंधळ | a local fog in the global fog. |
| आली आली नवी अस्पृश्यता | Then came the new untouchability; |
| स्पर्श टाळा अंतर वाढवा | avoid contact, widen the distance; |
| पण गर्दी कमी झाली नाही | but the crowds kept coming. |
| मरणाची सावली अंगावर आली | Even with the shadow of death upon us |
| तरीही बदलली नाही औषधोपचाराची जालीम रीत | remedies remained within old virulent ways, |
| तोच डोज त्याच गोळ्या | same dose, same tablets, |
| पॅरासिटामोल रँटॅक सेट्रीझिन डिक्लोफेनेक | paracetamol, rantac, cetrizine, diclofenac, |
| सबका मालिक एक | Sabka Maalik Ek[iii]! |
| बंदी मेलाच तर त्याला काढलं जातं | An inmate who dies is also taken out, |
| बाह्य रुग्णालयासाठी बाहेर | out, to a hospital, outside |
| ‘मार्गात मेला’ हे सिद्ध करायला | only to display that he “died on the way.” |
| ‘मूर्ख म्हाताऱ्याने डोंगर हलविले’ म्हणून | And because “the foolish old man moved the mountain,” |
| व्यवस्थेला चिकटलेल्या ढेकूणांनी | the vermin wedded to the system |
| त्याचा वचपा काढला | took revenge. |
| ‘पत्थलगडीचा फादर’ चा जुडिशियल मर्डर केला[iv]” | The “Father of Pathalgadi[v]” |
| was judicially murdered; | |
| थरथरत्या फादरची कत्तल करताना | and while killing the Father whose hands trembled, |
| त्यांचा हात थरथरला नाही | their hand didn’t shake. |
| खुनी आहेत ते | They are killers, |
| रक्त पितात माणसाचे ते | they drink human blood; |
| सल्ली डल्ली बोटीही खातात लांडग्यांप्रमाणे ते | like wolves, they even eat flesh, chunks, bones. |
| 60/40 कॅशवर जेल चालवतात | They repeatedly trumpet, “Won’t eat, won’t let them eat” and, |
| ‘न खाऊंगा न खाने दूंगा’ म्हणत म्हणत | run the prison on 60:40 cash basis. |
| बंद्यांच्या पोटावर पाय ठेवून जगतात उपरे नि | They, parasites, snatch from inmates’ mouths, and |
| असंतोषांच्या ज्वालांनी पेटून उठतात हंड्या [vi] | the flames of their discontent keep the hundi[vii] fires alive. |
| घाण्याच्या बैलाप्रमाणे कामाला जुंपलेले बंदीजन | Prisoners yoked to toil, like the oil-mill bullock, |
| पेलून आहेत तुरुंगाचा डोलारा हजारो वर्षांपासून | lug the jail edifice over millenia. |
| पाण्यात हागलेलं लोपत नसतं | But, when you shit in the water, it doesn’t simply go away, |
| तरी ते बोलतात खोट्यावर खोटं | yet, they spew lie after lie and |
| बंद्यांच्या हक्कांवर हागून ठेवतात खंडीभर | openly pile heaps of shit on prisoner rights. |
| तुरुंग असतं चतुष्पाद प्रवृत्तीसाठी प्रतिबंधित क्षेत्र | Prison is supposedly a prohibited area for bestial ways, |
| पण येथे तर रक्षकच भक्षक | but here, protectors are themselves predators, |
| हिंस्र रानटी दगलबाज तक्षक | violent, wild, treacherous vipers; |
| तरी विश्वगुरू पाठ पढवतात अहिंसेचे ! | yet the Vishwaguru gives lessons |
| in non-violence! | |
| आवडत नाही त्यांना ताठ चालणारा होमो सेपियन्स माणसालाच माणसाची हागिमुती काढायला लावतात | They don’t appreciate homo sapiens who walk erect. |
| तुरुंगात तुरुंग जाती व्यवस्थेचा | They make humans to remove the shit and piss of humans |
| ते बेमुर्वतखोरपणे चालवत आहेत वारसा | in the prison, brazenly carrying forward the tradition |
| ‘अंग्रेजों के जमाने के जेलर का’ | of the prison caste system |
| हुकूमाचे दावेदार तुरुंगाचे रक्षक (बाबा) | of the “Jailor of British times.” |
| चांगली माणसं आहेत | Prison guards, called “Babas,” who act on command, |
| गरीब आहेत | are good human beings, |
| थकलेली आहेत आणि | are poor, |
| पोलिसांनी जे काम त्यांच्यावर लादलेलं आहे | are weary, and |
| त्याने ते पिकून गेलेले आहेत | are drained out by |
| पोटाच्या आगीपाई त्यांच्या अंगावर वर्दी आहे | the work dumped on them by the police. |
| वर्दीखालच्या माणसाचं माणूसपण अजून जितं आहे | They’ve donned the uniform to keep the wolf from the door, |
| त्यांच्या कुटुंबीयांच्या दुःख-यातना | the humaneness of the being beneath the uniform yet remains; |
| माझ्या सांगाती आहेत | the torture and torment of their families |
| सुरक्षित पगारा व्यतिरिक्त | keeps me company; |
| त्यांचे जीवनही बंदिस्त आहे | but for their secure salary, |
| बंदिवानाप्रमाणे | their life too is incarcerated |
| याउलट | like the prisoner community. |
| क्रिमिनल व्यवस्थेच्या चिखलात राहून राहून | On the other hand, |
| क्रिमिनल माईंडेड झालेले कित्येक जेलर | several jailors with a criminal bent |
| तुरुंगाला बनवतात पाटलाचा वाडा | acquired over years in the muck of a criminal system |
| जातीचा माज तोंडावर येतो | make the prison a feudal manor. |
| करडया आवाजात जेलर दरडावतो | With caste arrogance writ large on his face |
| पादत्राने काढा ! | the jailor, tone imperious, dictates: |
| जय हिंद बोला ! | Off with your footwear! |
| जबरीने रांगा ! | Your Jai Hind[viii] I must hear! |
| नाहीतर ‘बाजीराव’ चा मारा ![ix] | Line up right here! |
| खाली पडणे हाच ज्यांचा स्वभाव आहे | Else the Bajirao[x]is near! |
| अध:पात हाच ज्यांचा गुण आहे | Such idiots, |
| असे इडियट्स | who by nature fall flat, |
| आम्हाला लाचार करतात | whose basic quality is decadence, |
| गुलाम करतात | render us helpless, |
| उपभोगतात हरामी आनंद | make us slaves, |
| जणू मानवी वारा | and derive obscene pleasure. |
| त्यांना चाटलाच नाही कधी | Seems that the winds of human kindness |
| मूलभूत अधिकाराच्या छातीवर | have never caressed them, ever. |
| त्यांनी उभ्या केल्या उंचच उंच तटबंद्या | They’ve built high and mighty fortifications |
| समजत नाही ते बंद्याला माणूस | upon the breast of the Fundamental Rights, |
| कमावलेली ओळख सारी | they don’t see the inmates as human. |
| बंद्याकडून ओरबाडून घेतली जाते क्षणार्धात | All esteem attained |
| बंदी : | is stripped off from the inmate in a moment. |

| आपण आईच्या गर्भातूनच गुन्हेगार होऊन आलोत का? आपल्या कष्ट घामातून निर्माण झालंय अतिरिक्त मूल्य | so says the “Mother” of one Gorky. |
| आणि अतिरिक्त मुल्यातून जन्माला आली चोरीमारी | Did we come out as criminals from our mothers’ wombs? |
| ‘पृथ्वी ही दलितांच्या तळहातावर तरलेली आहे’ | Surplus value was created from our sweat and labour, |
| मग तरीही आपण भूमीहिन का ? | and surplus value gave birth to the robber. |
| बेघर आणि भुकेले का ? | “The Earth rests on the palm of the Dalit[xi],” |
| शस्त्र ज्ञान मान प्रतिष्ठेपासून मोताद का ? | but still, why are we landless? |
| शंबुकाचा शिरच्छेद करून | Why are we homeless and hungry? |
| रामाची श्रेष्ठता सांगणारी धर्म व्यवस्था | Why have we been deprived of weapons, knowledge, respect, prestige? |

| आपणाला भिकारी करणारी वर्ग-जात व्यवस्था | beheads Shambuk |
| आई जेवू घालीना | to tell the tale of the superiority of Ram; |
| बाप भीक मागू देईना | a class-caste system that |
| मग भुकेल्या माणसालाच अत्याचारी म्हणून कसे चालेल | makes us all beggars |
| ती माती त्या हवेला काय करणार | by creating a few Adanis. |
| जी भूक पोसते | When, there’s no food from mother, |
| रक्तबीज बनवते | and don’t beg says father, |
| कोणाच्या भल्यासाठी निर्माण केली गेली | how then, can the hungry man be branded a tyrant? |
| कायदा आणि सुव्यवस्था | What can be done to that soil, that air, |
| जी वारंवार ‘बेल नॉट जेल’ची भूपाळी गाते | that nurtures hunger, |
| पण व्यवहारात वारंवार बेल नाकारते | that breeds seeds of blood? |
| देते तारीख पे तारीख | Who is meant to prosper |
| प्रोसिजर इटसेल्फ इज पनिशमेंट | from this structure of law and order? |
| बारा महिने 14 काळ | It repeatedly recites the morning prayer of “bail not jail” |
| रडत ठेवते | but in practice regularly denies bail, |
| कुढत ठेवते | gives date upon date, |
| सडत ठेवते | where process is the punishment, |
| कोर्ट पेशी शिवाय | for twelve months, fourteen seasons, |
| ‘त्यांचंच कोर्ट तेच फिर्यादी | without court production, |
| तेच पीपी आणि न्यायाधीशही | keep weeping, |
| कुणाला वकील करावे | keep grieving, |
| कुणाकडून न्यायाची अपेक्षा करावी?’ | keep rotting. |
| दर तारखे गणित असंतोषाचा पारा चढत जातो वरवर | “Their court, they the complainant, |
| सुधारगृह महापुरासारखा फुगत जातो रोज रोज | they’re the PP and the judge too, |
| येथे गुन्हेगार तयार करून मिळतात | who can I keep as my lawyer, |
| झगडी लफडी मारामारी[xii] | from whom can I expect justice?” |
| शिकारी करतात नालबंदी | With each date the temperature of accumulated discontent climbs new heights |
| मदोन्मत्त लाठ्यांचा रौंदळ बरसतो | and with each passing day the “correctional home” inflates like a flood. |
| चिपाड होऊन बंदी कोसळतो | Here criminals can be got readymade; |
| त्याच्या शरीरावर धावतात पिसाट इंगळ्या | quarrels, disputes, fights, |
| मेंटल गोळ्या देऊन देऊन माणसाळवलं जातं | and the hunters perform naalbandhi[xiii], |
| अत्याचाराचं मळभ गडद होत जातं | drunken lathis rain down rampantly |
| काळीज बधिर करणारा शून्य भवताल | and the shrunken prisoner collapses, |
| इथे टिकून राहायचं असेल तर | crazy scorpions run spasms through his being and, |
| मज्जातंतूंना बधिर होण्याची सवय लाव | with “mental” pills fed time and again, he is tamed. |
| सांगत राहतं बंद्याचं दुसरं मन | The gloom of tyranny grows ever darker, |
| ‘लोकनं पाहवा आणि आपलं इसरवा’ | with an enveloping void that deafens the soul, |
| असं स्वतःला समजावत | and, in order to survive here, |
| एकमेकांना आधार देत | train your nerves to go numb. |
| साथसंगत करीत करीत | The other mind of the prisoner keeps saying |
| संयम धिटाईनं जगत राहतात बंदीजन… | “See their state and forget one’s own.” |
| Thus, rationalising to themselves, | |
| supporting one another, | |
| and, providing companionship, | |
| with forbearance, with audacity, the prisoners remain alive… | |
| ‘बिग ब्रदर इज वॉचिंग यु’ | “Big Brother is watching you,” |
| येथील प्रत्येक जण नजरेच्या टप्प्यात | here each one is under watch, within range, |
| पाण्यामंदी टाकली आहे खबरीची जाळी | a net of informers has been cast in the pond, |
| तरीही पडतात धाडीवर धाडी | yet, they have raids upon raids. |

| प्रभुत्व स्थापित करण्याची रानटी कल्पना | a barbaric scheme to demonstrate dominance |
| मायबहिण न ओळखण्याचा गुन्हा करू नये कधी | so that, you’ll never ever commit the crime of not recognising who’s who. |
| तरी लाल गेटमध्ये रोज होणारी अर्धनग्न जोगवन | Yet, there are the daily semi-nude offerings at the Red Gate, |
| कोर्ट पेशीवरून परतताना गेटवर होणारे वस्त्रहरण | the undressing at the gate when returning from court, |
| आपल्या अवस्थांचे तमाम बिनपैशांचे तमाशे | an entire drama of our condition performed free of charge |
| नाहीयेत कुठेही कमतर | not anywhere more inferior than that |
| त्या जातीयवादी अपमानापेक्षा | casteist humiliation. |
| तरीसुद्धा आत्म्याचे उदातीकरण करायचे का ? | Yet, should we still raise the soul up high? |
| हिंदू राष्ट्राचे गौरव गान गायचे का ? | Should we sing paeans to the Hindu Rashtra? |
| खरं खरं सांग स्वातंत्र्या | Tell the real truth oh Freedom! |
| तुही यत्ता आहे तरी कंची? | If at all you have any standard, what is it? |
| शुभ्र लोकशाहीतील सराईत गुन्हेगारांनो | You master criminals of this pure democracy, |
| मी हे सारं उगाळणार नव्हतो | I wasn’t going to vomit all this |
| पण माझा मेंदू तुरुंगात प्रसरण पावतो | but, in prison my brain has gained expansion, |
| विद्रोह माझ्या धमन्या धमन्यातून उसळी मारतो | rebellion leaps and bounds through every artery; |
| माझे हातही जागे झाले आहेत | my hands too have come alive, |
| उठत नाही सलामी द्यायला | they don’t rise in salute. |
| माझ्या नजरेतून पुरेपूर उतरला आहात तुम्ही | You have totally fallen in my eyes. |
| तुमचे गुणगान गावे | My inner being |
| आतून असे वाटत नाही | does not feel like singing your praises. |
| माझी आता माझी सटकली | My mind has now snapped. |
| मी पुन्हा एकदा हा गुन्हा करणार आहे | I will commit the same crime again. |
| सत्य बोलणार आहे तुम्हाला नकोसं | I will tell the truth that you don’t want at all. |

| सामूहिक बधिरलेपणाच्या साम्राज्यात | of self-hypnotising untruths |
| मोहब्बत शब्दाने आपला आंतरिक अर्थ गमावला आहे अविवेकाची काजळी पसरली आहे सर्वदूर | and collective deafness, |
| प्रजातंत्र झालं आहे विषवृक्षम | the word love has lost its inner meaning. |
| आणि अफूची गोळी झाली आहे लोकशाही प्रणाली | The soot of irrationality has spread far and wide. |
| तेव्हा तुरुंगाची भुणभुण वाढणार आहे | The Republic has become a poison-tree |
| पण सडक से संसद तक | and the democratic system has become an opium pill, |
| या दरम्यानच्या विद्रोहालाच जर तुम्ही लाचार बनवलंत | and then, the grumbling from the prisons will only grow. |
| तर नामदेव ढसाळांच्या शब्दात मी गर्जून सांगेन | But if you, render all rebellions |
| तुमच्या अटकेला अर्थ नाही | from street corners to the House of Parliament, helpless |
| उभा देश झाला आता एक बंदीशाळा | then, I will, in the words of Namdeo Dhasal, roar and say |
| ज्यांचं आयुष्यच तुरुंग बनवलं गेलं आत – बाहेर | your arrest has no meaning, |
| त्या देशातील माणसं तुरुंगाला घाबरतील काय ? | the whole country is now a prison camp, and |
| विद्रोही मनाला कत्तल करणं सोपं आहे राव | will the people of such a country, |
| पण त्या मागच्या डिंगडांग परिस्थितीला ? | whose whole life, both inside and outside, has been made a prison, |
| चांगल्या माणसांसाठी हा देश राहिला नाही ! | fear a prison? |
| Boss, it is simple to kill a rebellious mind, | |
| but what of the action-reaction that led to it? | |
| This country is not for good people any more! | |
| तमाम गोळा बारूद असूनही | Despite all the explosives and ammunition at your command, |
| भय पेरण्यात असफल आहात तुम्ही | you have yet failed to sow fear; |
| माणसाला गुलामाप्रमाणे माणसाळवण्यात | you have failed to tame humans into slaves |
| सुसंस्कृत करण्यात असफल आहात तुम्ही | and make them civilized. |
| तुमच्या इंटेलिजन्सच्या पाळीव पोपटांना नसते जाणीव | Your caged parrots in Intelligence don’t seem to know |
| माणसाकडे असलेल्या एका लवचिक अवयवाची | about a flexible organ humans have |
| जो घनघोर अरिष्टातही करत असतो | that can, even in the deepest crisis, |
| डुकरमुसंडी विचार | have bellicose thoughts |
| चांगल्या वाईटाचा | about good and about bad |
| त्यातील द्वंद्वात्मकतेचा | and about the dialectic between them. |
| हे तनहाईचे कोंडवाडे बंद्यांना शिकवतात | This penned-in loneliness teaches prisoners |
| वर्चस्व आणि खाजगी मालमत्तेवर उभी तुरुंगाचे | to fundamentally assess |
| मुलगामी आकलन करायला | this prison erected on hegemony and private property, |
| तुरुंग फोडायची स्वप्नं बघायला | to dream dreams of razing the prisons |
| नि गोष्टी रचायला | and to create narratives, |
| गोष्ट पिंजऱ्यातील पक्ष्यांची | narratives of caged birds, |
| गोष्ट तुझी माझी आपली सर्वांची | narratives – yours, mine, ours, everyone’s. |
| या तुरुंगाला उभा करणारा महान गवंडी तूच | You are the great mason who built this prison, |
| लोखंडाला वितळवणारी आणि आकार देणारीही तूच तू | you are also the woman who melted the iron and gave it shape, |
| पण तूच बंदिस्त | but you, yourself, are imprisoned. |
| गोष्टीतील हे द्वंद्व सोडवावं लागेल | This conflict in the narrative must be resolved, |
| अस्तित्वातील दुःख निवारण करावं लागेल | the sorrows of existence have to be redressed. |
| व्यक्तिगत दुःखाच्या डोहातून | The path from the pool of personal sorrow |
| समस्तीच्या दुःखाकडे वाटचाल करावी लागेल | to collective sorrow must be crossed. |
| ‘दोषांच्या फांद्याची काटछाट केली तर | Our senses tell us |
| लुंपेनही सर्वहाराचा मित्र होतो’ | and our jail experiences tell us too, that |
| सांगतात जाणीवा | “If the flawed branches as chopped off, then |
| सांगतात जेल अनुभवही | the lumpen too becomes a friend of the proletariat.” |
| मग दोस्ती बनतात | It is then that friendships are formed, |
| मैफली घडतात | gatherings come to life. |
| धुमसत राहतात जेलपक्षी | Jailbirds smoulder within, |
| हळूहळू तापणाऱ्या पाण्याप्रमाणे | like water being slowly heated which, |
| तापमान 100 डिग्री झालं की | when the temperature reaches hundred degrees |
| पाण्याची वाफ होते | turns to steam; |
| ते गोठवलं की बर्फ बनते | and if frozen, becomes ice. |
| जाणीव ही एक कला आहे | Consciousness is an art, |
| जाणीव ही एक शास्त्र आहे | consciousness is a science, |
| जाणीव म्हणजे प्रबोध | consciousness means enlightenment, |
| जाणीव म्हणजे प्रभाकर | consciousness means the creation of light; |
| कितीही झाकली तरी प्रकाशमान होणारच | and however much it may be enclosed, it will yet shed light. |
| जगाचा इतिहास वर्ग संघर्षाचाच परिणाम | World history is the outcome of class struggle. |
| समाजामध्ये द्वंद्व आहे | There is conflict in society, |
| द्वंद्वानेच गतिमान आहेत | and it is conflict alone that moves |
| समाज आणि माणसं | society and humans. |
| टाकीचे घाव सोसूनच येणारहे नवा माणूस | It is only by enduring the wounds of the chisel that the new human will take shape. |

| तुरुंगकोठड्या बनवतात रॅडिकल नि समजदार | Prison cells makes inmates radical and considerate, |
| तुरुंगकोठड्या शिकवतात आत्मपरीक्षण नि | prison cells teach self-examination and |
| वजुदसाठी संघर्ष करायला | the struggle to exist |

[i] Bhakri: A round flatbread from western India made from millet or rice flour
[ii] Satymeva Jayate: India’s national motto, which translates to “Truth alone triumphs.”
